| In 1786, The Roundhouse was built as a small round guardhouse that served to protect against enemies entering Cape Town from the Camps Bay side. Later on, it became a farm and between 1817 and 1823 Lord Charles Somerset used The Roundhouse as a hunting lodge where he would take his friends to shoot lion, leopard and buck on the slopes of Lions Head. The original house consisted of a hall, a saloon, six bedrooms, a kitchen and pantry, slave rooms, a storeroom, and a garden house. |
| Today, the restaurant boasts a casual elegant atmosphere, described as "Historical Preservation meets African Chic." . Some of the touches that stand out included Peter Steger Crystal Glasses, Zimbabwean Royal Sable Copperware, Zimbabwean Winsor Silverware, Phillip Starke Nguni chairs, and original artwork by Fiona Rowett. The Oval room is fantastic, with its fully customizable ability it's able to cater for both large or small, intimate events. | The Rumbullion is the name given to the terraces at the Roundhouse, which are surrounded by centuries old pomegranate trees and beautifully landscaped gardens. It's a 17th century term meaning 'a riotous good time', and describes the ambiance perfectly. The restaurant serves French cuisine based on seasonal textures and flavors as well as fine rare wines from a variety of boutique cellars from all over the world. Dining is an absolute delight at the restaurant, which offers diners clarity of flavor and subtlety, plus a fascinating level of innovation in each and every dish served.
Begin your four-course meal with a tasty chilled watermelon Consomme, pickled summer melons and Parma ham, complimented by a 2007 Glen Carlou Quartz stone Chardonnay. Or try the vanilla cured Salmon Mi Cuit, apple puree and Hamilton Russel olive oil, served with a 2006 Rutenberg Five Soldiers Chardonnay, both of which are simply stunning. Next up, try the Baby Squid stuffed with Braised Oxtail, popped wild rice and cauliflower puree, complimented by a 2006 Paul Cluver Seven Flags Pinot Noir. |
| Another fantastic meal is the roasted quail, with pancetta and smoked corn stuffing, served with corn puree and sherry vinegar. This meal is enhanced by the 1999 Cordoba Crescendo, perfectly suited to the meal. The restaurant offers diners a brilliant selection of tasty desserts to complete the meal. The Apricot Soufflé served with Amaretto Ice Cream and a 2004 Klein Contantia vin de constance is exquisite, whilst the Chocolate Daquoise Cake and Chocolate Sorbet served with a 15 year old Niepoort Colheita port with transport you to a new world of taste delight. |
| The restaurants 14-page wine list emphasises South African wines and listed international wines from France (Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire, Rhone and Alsace), Spain, Italy, Germany, Australia and Lebanon.
